A weekend of bliss in The Snowy Mountains

Winter has arrived and all we can think about is slippers, snuggles and cups of hot-anything. Others, however, dream only of repeatedly hurdling down a snow-covered mountain on a couple pieces of beechwood. Each to their own. If you’ve found you like the company of a thrill-seeker but enjoy the quieter life yourself then may we suggest a stay at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa to keep everyone happy? Nestled in the hills of the Snowy Mountains, this is more like its own national park then your typical resort. Cleverly designed with year-round drawcards like fishing, hiking, an indoor heated pool and sauna, plus play equipment for young ones- you can do everything, or nothing, here.

If it’s the relaxation trail you’re on, it will lead you to the Lake Crackenback Spa and Wellness Centre. Perched on top of a hill, this spa has pride of place in the beautiful high-country. Services include facials, hand & foot treatments, cupping, a long list of massages types including hot stone; as well as many beauty services like waxing, tinting and tanning. The staff are beauty-buffs, Kellie recommended some very useful products available locally and she also gratefully passed on some advice about how to deal with our persistent dermatitis (natural products derived from emu oil!) and made our visit a warm and memorable one.

What made this stay even more appealing is the convenience of the Girls Getaway package we experienced. Taking time away with girlfriends has become quite common and is a trend we’re happy to follow. Thanks to this rise in women-only breaks there is now a service, Girls Getaways who negotiate discounted package deals which are posted on their website. You search by region then take your pick of the mini-break that best suits you and your friends. No surprises that most revolve around massages, food, wine and general blissfulness set in picturesque accommodation.

Our Lake Crackenback / Girls Getaway trip was no exception to the rule and began with a gourmet hamper on arrival that set the scene for the weekend. Not only did it hold the holy trinity of wine, cheese and crackers but the white was chilled, the chopping board and utensils were included and we had to check three times that we were definitely, certainly, absolutely supposed to take the picnic rug home with us too. Bonus! Sitting on our deck as the sun sets over the Snowys, you couldn’t have scripted the beauty of the afternoon as a family of deer play metres from our doorstep. The amount of wildlife is like something out of a Disney movie – rabbits, ducks, roos and wombats roam freely so if you’re driving at night, take it easy and keep an eye out.
Of course, we took up the included 30-minute massage in the package and it was heaven. There is something extra plush about an indulgence like this set in the mountains. If the beauty therapy isn’t enough, how about some therapy of the retail kind? The $50 Birdsnest voucher (you can spend online or at their Cooma store nearby) more than sweetens this already great deal – we came home feeling and looking refreshed.

If you find yourself in these woods or you’re searching for an escape with a difference, this is a money-saving deal worth considering. Prepare for total bliss out in 3, 2, 1…
