Coastal Casual in Shift and Shirt Dresses

Summer has well and truly landed across most of the country and all we want to wear is the most breathable relaxing pieces available. It’s all about those outfits that make you exhale and feel light. Comfortable, loose but still refined and stylish – it’s a delicate balance. Comfort can mean different styles to different folks so we we’ve compiled this feature with fabulous shift dresses, shorts or shirt dresses for whatever takes your fancy. Pair all with your favourite pair of supportive sandals, an on-trend straw bag and don’t forget your sunnies, hat and we have to say it, sunscreen. No matter if you’re into shorts or frocks, we think each of these looks are just the looks made for the good old Aussie lifestyle.

Shift Dresses

Find yourself a natural fiber shift dress in your favourite colour and you will be sorted for summer. So easily dressed up with wedges and layered wooden necklaces or down with flats and a floppy hat your shift should come with you wherever you go this summer. A brilliant option for those of us who don’t like to have anything nipped at the waist, this is a good style for traditional apple or straight shaped bodies. If you’re hourglass you may consider adding a belt if it’s not too hot.

Shirt Dresses

A perfectly-fitting shirt dress is one that is loose but doesn’t swamp – skims the body but doesn’t fall into an overtly triangle shape. You likely wouldn’t want clingy fabric in the heat and a mere suggestion of shape is all your require from a shirt dress. The styling options are endless yet what is great about these frocks is that they don’t require much else. The simplest of accessories, basic slides and a slight pop of the colour and go!

Shorts

Long or short, tailored or slim, if you can wear them then you’re likely living in them! If you’re going for the casual bermuda style then we love to add a tonal belt for some simple sophistication with a loosely tucked top. Whites and creams are the go-to colours as they will go with most of your wardrobe and keep your look fresh unlike darker tones. Interestingly, there is quite a bit of browns around and we’re ok with that too – easier to keep clean but still soft for summer. Your more tailored shorts typically look best with a loose top that skims over the mid-line for comfort and look best in a sturdier fabric to keep the shape.
