Style Sessions: perfecting the art of dressing by Kristin Todd – RRP $32.99 available for all good book retailers or New Holland Publishers

Looking for hard and fast fashion rules? You won’t find them in Kristen Todd’s book because frankly, they’re a load of junk. We also don’t subscribe to the old adages about body shapes being likened to fruits because despite the “rules” sometimes an apple can wear a fit-and-flare dress and that same apple may have some features like a pear. Which makes us all fruit salads, really! Styling is not an exact science with perfect equations, it’s a visual medium that involves a bit of trial and error and often simply comes down to personal taste mixed with a healthy dose of confidence. And these are the motivating factors behind Kristen Todd’s debut book, Style Sessions: perfecting the art of dressing.

Kristen knows her stuff and has packed the experience a stellar styling career into the pages of this book. Her career spans across all corners of the fashion industry- from regular Westfield’s stying to editorial shoots and large advertising campaigns but it’s Kristen’s approach to her personal styling that interests us most. It’s her hands-on, real-life experience that truly builds a styling prowess for different women with varied needs. Kristen says that your wardrobe should be an extension of your lifestyle, not just the latest runway looks, and aims to assist women to find the perfect looks for their body, tastes and day-to-day life. It’s this well-rounded approach that has built up a long-standing list of clients who seek Kristen’s advice on a regular basis. While a personal stylist isn’t in everyone’s budget, a book is. We think it’s worth checking out this little book of secrets next time you’re seeking inspiration to lift themselves out of a style rut or just curious, like us! Judging from these images provided to us, we think it’s worth it just for a peek just for the pictures. Keep reading for some more intel below, where Kristen tells us a bit about each of these clients she has styled and shares some words of wardrobe wisdom…

“Figure types guides don’t work, no one fits into fruit shapes. Flaunt your assets and put the things you don’t like in the background. Don’t worry just about the silhouette as a whole, think about individual parts.” – Kristen

Dee – is a perfect example that your age doesn’t define your style. Dee dresses like a modern woman rather than a concept of her age. I love how her individual style comes through with accessories, while still wearing shapes that flatter and are ageless. We keep her base layers classic, they just have to be shapes that suit you rather than a trend, and play with accessories. Dee’s ankle boot has a little kitten heel which gives her petite stature a little lift, putting her slightly onto her toes to deliver a long leg line and a couple of extra centimetres.

“Don’t worry about dressing according to your age, don’t be guided by numbers, be guided by the mirror and when things change personally that’s when we adjust style. It’s about being present with where you’re at rather than a number. We women are so interesting, the rate at which we age is different, some of us have firm arms or great legs. It’s an individual journey.” – Kristen.

Liz – This outfit represents Liz’s lifestyle- she spends lots of time in the Hunter Valley and her outfit captures that. She dresses for her lifestyle and that is what her clothes have to first accommodate. These soft neutrals look great on all ages but as we get older, the colour that is framing your face is important, which is why Liz is wearing this pretty pink scarf around her face. Plus, a scarf is a great way to put personality into any look.

Yvonne – practicality, comfort and style are Yvonne’s requirements. She needs an active outfit as she is a busy grandma chasing little ones. Her wardrobe requires comfort however stylishness is no compromise. The vibrant hue around Yvonne’s face works well for her- I always advise to just continue trying colours. Don’t worry about old rules that refer to skin undertone, if it throws light on your face and you love it, wear it. This youthful colour on Yvonne adds a richness and is gorgeous with houndstooth, like all vibrant colours it gives it life.
Lastly, the black necklace draws the eye down and elongates the body.

“Our complexion is forever changing thanks to tanning, seasons or makeup. Our skin, hair, eyebrows aren’t set in stone so the colours that you wear depend on your changing canvas. Those old rules are too rigid so I always say just hold it up to your face, if you like it, wear it! If you love the colour and it doesn’t suit your complexion then don’t wear it around your face break it up with a scarf or wear it in a skirt or pant. ” – Kristen
