We asked our go-to hair expert Amy Gaudie who is the Owner & Creative Director of Brisban salon Urban Chic, what style of haircut she is most commonly asked for by her mature clients. It turns out there is one look that is a standout and Amy has even given it a nickname, The Bixie. We know that many women are heading off to the salon with a vague idea of what they want and often find it hard to communicate the exact style. So we’ve asked Amy to provide images of this popular short hairstyle for over 50’s and a little explanation to help you achieve it if you’re keen too.
Amy says:
“At Urban Chic, our most requested style with our more mature clientele would be what we like to call a “bixie” – a mix between a bob and a pixie cut. It’s super versatile and easy to manage between hair appointments, and really only needs a trim every 5-6 weeks depending on thickness.”
This haircut is great because typically it’s shorter in the back, so less work is involved when styling your hair. Usually, I will keep it longer and softer around the face, keeping it more flattering and feminine with enough length to enable clients to tuck behind the ear if desired.

My go-to brush to style would be a flat Denman Brush as you achieve great tension and a smooth, flat finish to create that lived-in texture.
I use Wella’s EIMI Sugar Lift (a flexible spray infused with sugar to provide lift, shine and touchable, grippy texture) to blow dry and this delivers a shiny and textured finish.
